Here's what he had to say regarding the Dark Knight himself:

IGN Comics: The minute Blackest Night #0 hit, fans started speculating about the possible involvement of Batman. Obviously, the fate of Bruce Wayne is a question that's yet to be answered, but the ambiguous state of the character has many wondering whether or not he might be a candidate for the Black Lantern Corps. There's a body, but due to the last panel of Final Crisis we know it's more complicated than that.

Dan DiDio: Exactly. And those complications do play into the early stages of Blackest Night, but they also play out in other places as well over the course of the year.

IGN Comics: So is Blackest Night the next chapter in Bruce Wayne's story, or is that something that will be tackled somewhere else?

DD: I think Bruce Wayne's story is one that needs to be told in the Batman books. That being said, you can't do a major event without touching upon a major character like Batman in some way, shape or form.

IGN Comics: When we talked to Mike Marts several months back, before Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader hit, he mentioned that Gaiman's story could be read a number of different ways. How much of that two-parter was a figurative love letter to the character, and how much was an actual reflection of his current status and/or a continuation of Bruce Wayne's story?

DD: That's an interesting question. For me, I look at it as a figurative explanation of what Batman means to everyone. All the characters in the Batman Universe were speaking from the fan point of view about how essential the character is to us.

That being said, there's so much of what we're unfolding that in theory it can all fit in very nicely down the road. But for me, that was a love letter to Batman as far as I'm concerned. For me, it encapsulated so much of what is essential to that character. Neil did a beautiful job, and we were so happy to have him involved with us in this particular turning point in Batman's history.

IGN Comics: One last question that there seems to be some confusion over. Frank Quitely's working on the first three issues of Batman and Robin. After that, we'll see a different artist tackle each three-issue block?

DiDio: Correct.

IGN Comics: And Frank Quitely's coming back for the last three?

DiDio: Frank is coming back at the end.
