Someone believes that Bruce Wayne may still be alive…and that someone is Red Robin. But who is wearing the Red Robin costume, and why is he traveling the globe looking for a dead man? Whoever he is, he's not alone in his search!

REVIEW BY: Jamie Desrochers

***SPOILER ALERT***

Let’s put it out there and make it easy. Red Robin is Tim Drake. Now that we’ve put that aside…
I was worried about Tim Drake’s role with the outcome of Battle For the Cowl. Tim’s my boy. Although Jason Todd was Robin when I started collecting, he was VERY near-death. His death traumatised me as a child….So much so that when Tim Drake reappeared on the scene he echoed my sentiments…Batman NEEDS a Robin. I still remember being excited when I saw him in his new Robin costume once his training was complete. He held his own title for years….

Red Robin is the continuation of Tim Drake’s story.

Put aside the HORRIBLE name and the fact that this moniker was lifted from the pages of Kingdom Come…which is a bonehead move on DC’s part, in my opinion. Put aside that prejudice and consider it the next level in Tim’s evolution.

In Madrid, Tim infiltrates a group of villains showing the confidence and competence he demonstrated in his prior series. On the inside, Tim seems a bit doubtful. With Bruce’s apparent death, he’s questioning the rules that govern his prior mission.

Much like this review, we discover pretty early on that Tim is Red Robin. What I didn’t expect was a flashback that would explain how he became that character. It seems that his position as Robin was usurped by Damian Wayne, who taunts Tim about his exclusion from the Dynamic Duo. Dick’s reasoning is to keep Damian under his watchful eye as a sidekick…but he still needs Tim and considers him an equal. All the while Damian continues his insults… even comes to blows. Damian is a heartless little snot, but I can’t help but like him for some odd reason.

Tim is crushed and leaves the Batcave. We discover that his reason for taking the Red Robin disguise is that it would not link back to Bruce or Dick (yet all he did was put a “red” before Robin…still) and that the moniker was already tainted (by Jason Todd and The General, I suppose). Tim’ going to have to get dirty to accomplish his mission, so any ties to his past can’t be obvious.

You see, good old Timmy is the only one who thinks Bruce Wayne is alive…and he’ll scour the world to prove it. Tim Drake/Wayne has been consistently the most loyal of the Robins, so this comes as no surprise, yet we really see how good a team Bruce and Tim are. While we don’t really know what evidence Tim has to prove Bruce is still alive (yet), we know that it is more than survivor’s guilt.

But watch out, Tim…you’re being watched by none other than the Demon’s Head! Ra’s seems to be tracking Red Robin through his search…

Decent first issue! Tim is well portrayed and it seems to follow the flow from the Robin series. Other than the silly Red Robin name and costume, this may as well be called The Search for Bruce Wayne. I’m looking forward to seeing how Tim will piece it all together. The art is not my favourite, but its solid enough.

The Good: “My name is Tim Wayne!” as Tim punches Damian
The Bad: Dick replacing Tim seems kinda cold.
The Ugly: The name and costume

SCORE: 3.5 out of 5 stars
