Batman: Arkham Asylum Collector's Edition Review

Posted by Gary Wednesday 26 August 2009

Batman Arkham Asylum is the Batman video game we've always wanted. It seems cliche to say so by now, since even the game's trailers say it, but now I can confirm that it's THE TRUTH. I pre-ordered the collector's edition of Arkham Asylum for my PS3 a few weeks ago, so now that I got it in I decided I'd post a quick review of it.

The first thing I noticed was how impressive the package itself was. The case was a large black box shaped like a bat. Once you open the box, the first thing underneath the foam is the Batarang on its stand. It's an impressive little piece - 14 inches long and shaped like the batarangs in the game - and now looks great on my mantle. Next comes the compartment with the game itself; along with a few other goodies, most notably my Dr. Arkham's journal with detailed info on all of the main characters in the game. Since I pre-ordered from Gamestop, I got the code to download the "Dem Bones" and "Crime Alley" maps, which came on the opposite side of a cool sticker with the "Batman: Arkham Asylum" logo on it. I don't know if all collector's editions have the sticker, but it's pretty cool.

Finally, the game itself. It comes in a case with 2 discs; one being the game, and the other a behind the scenes dvd. But then I put the game in, and was totally impressed from the beginning. I had already played the demo so I knew a bit of what to expect, but the game is just epic in scale. I have heard comparisons to Bioshock, and it's totally true; the level of detail given to this game is insane.

I just wanted to type this out real quick, and I haven't had the time yet to try out the challenge maps, but I'm excited to play through them. As I said, I got two exclusive challenge maps since I ordered it through Gamestop, and of course with the PS3 I get the "Play as the Joker" challenge maps too, which just seems awesome. Oh, and another PS3 exclusive; if you play Arkham Asylum on your PS3 you will get a free new "Batcave Outpost" apartment unlocked on Playstation home; not a lot to do there, but it looks cool - I'm hoping for some minigames! Oh, and one more thing, for those interested in trophies, I count 48 of 'em (but I don't know how many "achievements" you get on X-Box, sorry).

That's about it, folks. Just felt like it deserved a quick post to let you know just how great this game is. Get your copy, in stores now!
