BLACKEST NIGHT: BATMAN #1 Review

Posted by Cory Saturday 22 August 2009

Written by Peter J. Tomasi

Review by Knight

I was really impressed by this issue and Tomasi seems like a perfect pair with Syaf. As soon as I got the book I read it quickly to find out what happen's and it basically just spin's out of Blackest Night 2 and Battle for the Cowl with a small hint of R.I.P.
The Issue begin's with Batman and Robin taking Bruce's skulless body and his parent's skelaton's to the bat bunker where they will be safe. Damian is startled at the sight of his grandparent's body's and leaves Dick to collect them.
In the Himalaya's Deadman is experiancing physic pain due to the fact the dead are rising. He is then pulled to his grave where he try's to stop his body from becoming a Black Lantern. However he fail's due to the fact he experiances physical pain for the first time as a ghost. As the corpse go's off Deadman set's off to find Batman.
Twenty-five thousand feet above Gotham people are taking body's of supervillain's to Washington. Suddenly Black Lantern Ring's crash through kill everyone on the plane and make the Tom Trigger, Blockbuster, Abbatoir, Magpie, Deacon Blackfire, KGBeast, King Snake, Ventriloquist, and Tad Trigger. The Black Lantern's escape the exploding plane.
Damian then return's to the arrogant attitude complaining about the corpses and wanting to become Batman untill Deadman takes control of Dick's body. Damian punches at Deadman demanding answers and the car crashes. Deadman then go's into Damian's body so he can talk to Dick. Dick now has knowlege about Blackest Night and Deadman has knowlege about Dick's life. As Dick's parent's begin to rise from the dead same with Red Robin's Deadman begin's to experiance physic pain again and it start's to kill Damian. Dick forces Deadman out and the pain stops. Dick check's out Tim's parent's graves and discovers that their empty and get's Tim to come after telling him that. Damian tell's Dick it was a good idea that he called for backup and show's him the bat-signal (busted after GL crashed on it) with body's crawling all over it.
Overall I'd rate it a 8.5 out of 10, now as I mentioned above it has connection's to many series I'd say 50% Blackest Night, 30% Battle for the Cowl, and the rest Batman R.I.P/Final Crisis Now the relation to Blackest Night is obvious, to R.I.P/Final Crisis it's answering some of the unanswered questions like is the skelaton really Bruce's. Well they are taking the skelaton back to the bunker to study it. We know Bruce go injured because of R.I.P and because of those injuries he got captured and was injured more, injured so much he became a skelaton. Some of those skelaton's unanswered question's are being answered. To Battle for the Cowl I wouldn't state it being in the aftermath but dealing with the aspect's of the aftermath such as reaction to a new Batman (Deadman had a reaction to Dick being Batman and what happend to Bruce). So I hope it deal's a little less on the Batman side and a bit more on Blackest Night side.
