REVIEW - BATMAN THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD - MAYHEM OF THE MUSIC MEISTER!
For those of you who have been following Gotham Knights Online and listening to the podcasts, will know that I've been hyping about this episode of Batman: The Brave and the Bold - Mayhem of the Music Meister since it was originally hinted upon at the beginning of the year. I interviewed the composers Kris Carter, Lolota Ritmanis and Michael McCusition, who remained tight lipped about its production.
Some fans were given an exclusive sneak preview at this years San Diego Comic Con and the response was resounding and for a lot of fans in the US the sudden stop of the season was becoming more and more infuriating. I was very surprise (and ecstatic), that the episode aired early in the UK with repeat showings of the episode. To top it off the news and hype just got better and better as New Line Records announced that they will be releasing an official soundtrack for the episode…
Today sees the episode finally air in the US, but I thought it was time I finally reviewed the episode. I have to say that it is 100% as good as I had hoped for. The premise of the episode is the Music Meister taking control of the world using his hypnotic voice amplified through a satellite that he steals during the shows opening scene. Here we are introduced to a group of villains that includes; The Clock King, Black Mantra and Gorilla Grood. While they attempt to steal the satellite rocket for themselves they are thwarted by; Aquaman, Green Arrow, Plastic Man and Black Canary. Then the fun starts, while both groups are talking Black Mantra breaks out into song along with the rest of the entire group and we learn through the first song that the Music Meister (voiced by the very talented Neil Patrick Harris), who has the ability to control peoples minds through his hypnotic voice, while also getting a glimps of his origin.
Batman enters the scene and so starts (what I consider), some amazing one liners including, this "concerto of crime" and "corrupt conductor", which play throughout the episode. Music Meister is able to launch the rocket containing the satellite and lures all the villain and heroes who have been dancing the entire scene towards to fired up rockets as a distraction to enable him to escape from Batman.
Key moment in this scene is Batman putting some ear plug in to prevent the Meister taking control over him, I was gutted at this point because I realised we wouldn't get to hear Batman sing.
After a quick save we move to the Music Misters lair, while playing like Phantom of the opera, we now start to see various musical costumes he dons again throughout the entire episode. Now we get to hear possibly the best song of the show "Drive Us Bats", showing Arkham Asylum for the first time in Batman: The Brave and the Bold, this song is also featured on the site.
Next is a love song titled "If Only" sung beautifully by Grey DeLisle as Black Canary. She plays an integral role due to her high vocal powers but we get to see how much home much in love she is with Batman. After Canary and Batman are captured and other quick song, this time title "Death Trap"… Not the best in the show but we hear Batman say to Canary after they escape "Was the sing necessary"…
The finally showdown takes place with the Meister putting his plan into action and hypnotically controlling the world to steal for him. This is another big musical number, but finally we hear Batman sing opera style to Canary (the voice was by Jeff Bennett, who has a very well placed voice). As Black Canary hits a pitch, Batman swipes Meister microphone which resonates through the speaks and satellite to break his mind control over the world.
The show ends with a reprise of the "If Only" song this time between Black Canary and Green Arrow, starting the couples romance.
The story was exhilarating, the animation as always top notice. I can't believe how well the script was done to have the entire episode run with lyrics and Grey DeLisle is fantastic. Now if Batman made a more prominent singing presence in the episode it would have been the icing on the cake, but keeping him in character was probably the way to go in the end. There was a little hiccup with story details, as Batman gives all the heroes at the beginning of the story the same earplugs but they end up under the Music Misters control again, but this by no means a distracts from the story. Defiantly the best episode of the season and I truly hope we get a Music Meister reprise in season two!!!
Don't forget the soundtrack is available from tomorrow, available to download from iTunes or an exclusive purchase at Amazon.com.
Also from Monday we will be running the competition giving two lucky reader a day for a whole week the opportunity to win the soundtrack, so I hope you pay attention to the episode.
Lastly, if you are a fan of the music, then don't forget to download the podcast when I had the opportunity to interview all three of the composers, with an exclusive article that includes three exclusive music clips from previous episodes in the season.
I guarantee you will be singing "Drives Us Bats" for day!
