Well season two of Batman: The Brave and the Bold is underway and I've got to say it is off to a good start.
Titled "Death Race to Oblivion!" we see Mongul return to hold Earth ransom, forcing it's greatest heroes--and villains!--to race for the planet's survival. It's a crooked bargain wherein even if Batman wins, he dooms his fellow heroes--if the villains don't doom them first!
The teaser is defiantly one to remember, with the first appearance of Captain Marvel. We see a group of children enter a museum (including Billy Batson). One of the children Mark Desmond is acting peculiar when Batman grabs a hold of him too the shock of the public. Suddenly Desmond takes a chemical serum transforming him into Blockbuster (first appearance Detective Comics #345). As Blockbuster, he subdues Batman, he then grabs Billy Batson, but Batson transforms into his alter-ego, Captain Marvel, and defeats Blockbuster.
This is a great beginning to the show and I'm looking forward to seeing Captain Marvel appear properly in an upcoming episode.
The main story doesn't waste anytime getting to the race. Mongul appears in his "War Moon", and carves a racing track in the desert somewhere. Summoning a group of heroes and villains to take part in his "Death Race".
As the episode progresses we see a side to Batman that is a little shocking. His loss of compassion and fairplay, which also shocks a lot of the heroes including the Green Arrow. The plot bit to look out for is the argument between Batman and Green Arrow about a previous race at Monte Carlo.
The race starts and we bare witness to what can be compared to as a scene from Wacky Races. It's fantastic to watch as the Joker commentates the race, seeing all the gadgets and ingenuity from all the heroes and villains and their vehicles.
During the race the heroes think they have lost Huntress who falls to her death, but we quickly see Batman in the Batmobile and the Batcyle race to the finish beating Steppenwolf to Monguls dismay.
As each character falls victim to each other ballsy maneuvers and cheating the War Moon quickly fills up. Green Arrow, Plastic Man and Guy Gardner come up with a plan to escape. This was basically the plan all along. Batman hinted to Green Arrow about the race in Monte Carol against the Clock King, which actually didn't take place, but was refering to the plan they adopted to trick Clock King.
Mongul take a final tries to take one final attack at Batman and Huntress, he sees his War Moon explode before his very eyes as the rest of the racers escape.
A really good start and the episode is filled with a whole horde of characters, which is great to see Batman's supporting cast continue to make a presence. I just hope we don't see to many familiar faces this season and the production team try to incorporate more new characters from the DC Universe. The storyline was great and seeing a side to Batman was shocking until all was explained at the end.
SCORE: 4/5
