REVIEW BY: Bob Tilley
What the hell is going on? Superman and the Outsiders Brion talking like the mighty Thor and Katana going all Kill Bill. This is the first issue by Dan Didio and Philip Tan and the mystery was set back in October when the new creative team was announced. Philip Tan has teased over recent months character designs some of which made it into this issue.
The first thing I want to talk about is the character portrayal of Brion and Katana, and to say they were coming across as "out of character", is an understatement. The entire comic takes place in Markovia and we start off with Brion talking to Roy a few times like a minion instead of a teammate. We see that Brion has sent Black Lightening and Katana to battle some pirates who are attacking Markovian ships. Here we see Katana's brutal side as she kills a number of guards against Black Lightening advise.
There is a small scene with Jack and Rex and Jack also gets a little fraught with Rex. After a bit more of a pirate fight the end of the issue sees Brion address his state and refers to the team as "my Outsiders" and talks about a unity to bring peace to Markovia... a union with the New World of Krypton with the Eradicator!!!
Well that's Dan Didio's first issue done... what did I think? To soon to tell, the one aspect I did enjoy was the mystery behind Geo-Force and Katana. Like I pointed out at the beginning both were totally out of character but I'm sure there is a good reason behind it. Dan Didio is a long time fan of the Outsiders and I believe he wouldn't desecrate the idea of a good team. The ending was a doosy with the Eradicator turning up so I'm interested to see what's going to happen.
Artwork by Philip Tan was great but the inking seems a little messy, which is the only thing I think needs addressing at this point.
SCORE: 3.5/5
