We posted the details at the beginning of the week for the latest Batman: The Brave and the Bold episode titled The Super Batman of Planet X!
Then WB emailed to tell us the episode was delayed until the end of March. Well imagine my surprise this morning when I switched on my TV to find the episode was nearly at a finish here in the UK...
Thank god for re-runs, that's all I can say and tonight I wasn't disappointed. This episode was truly fantastic for a number of reasons; the first the return of Kevin Conroy as Batman of Zurr En Arrh, Clancy Brown as Rohtul (planet X version of Lex) and Dana Delany as Vilsi (planet X version of Lois Lane), in an episode that looks like something from Dan Dare and an Elseworlds version of Superman Batman.
The teaser is a brilliant start with another appearance of Dr. Magnus and the Metal Men. This time we get to see Batman in disguise as Matches Malone as they disguise themselves as arms dealers.
The main episode starts off with Batman and Green Arrow, chasing down some space pirates, when the collision of Batman's Bat Rocket's shield and the pirates weapon system causes a inter-dimensional worm-hole pulls Batman into another dimension.
I've always loved the alternate universe concept and DC have fed the fan base with a plethora over the years with Final Crisis, Batman the Brave and the Bold has already utilised this many times already and the up coming Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths. Batman crash lands on the Plant Zurr En Arrh in the city Gothtropolis. This is a futuristic cross between Gotham and Metropolis and Batman doesn't waste any time taking down the criminal element. During a fight with a crime scene not that different to the killing of Thomas and Martha Wayne Batman nearly takes down the villain, but has the flee because he has a laser gun and then... in steps Planet X Batman voiced by non-other than the legendary man himself Kevin Conroy.
There meeting is awesome as they suddenly have to race to stop Rohtul the planet X version of Lex Luthor. This scene puts Rohtul in a very Superman 1950 Lex using massive robots. During the fight our Batman suddenly discovers he is developing super power similar to Superman. The reason for this is due to the air on Zurr En Arrh, which contains a chemical that increases human physiology. One thing to mention is the scene in the Batcave where we meet Alfa-Red the butler robot.
As the epiosde progresses Batman starts to become more and more reliant on his super powers, which is over shadowing planet X Batman. The whole of Gothtopolis fall in love with him. I love this whole scene as it puts Batman in the superman role and he really enjoys it.
Rohtul manages to escape custody and quickly discovers Quartz is Batman's version of Kryptonite. He attacks and take down Super Batman, but other Batman comes to his rescue. He sprays Batman with a quartz shield which removes Batman powers and both Batmen take Rohtul down. The main point is this make Batman realise he was forgetting who he was by become swept up in the superhuman role to much.
Green Arrow manages to locate Batman after his difficult run in with the space pirates, there is a very funny scene with Green Arrow getting super powers but (Kevin Conroy), Batman quickly sprays Arrow killing the fun.
From start to finish this entire episode was just amazing and is now one of my all time favorites next to the Music Meister episode from season one, well animated as usual and the story was brilliant. Seeing Batman in Gothtopolis as the Clark Kent version with Kevin Contoy voicing him was perfect to see. WB has delayed this in the US but it truly is well worth the wait.
SCORE: 5/5
