IGN - GRANT MORRISON AND ANDY KUBERT: RECREATING BATMAN

Posted by Unknown Friday 5 March 2010

With the release of all the colour covers to Batman: The Return of Bruce Wayne being released today the excitement of Bruce Wayne's return is starting to grow.

IGN have posted an amazing interview with artist Andy Kubert, who is responsible for all these fantastic covers and talks about his ideas and concepts for each incarnation, including some new character design not yet released for Bruce Wayne journey through time. The interview also ends with a chat with story architect Grant Morrison.

Andy Kubert: I was first contacted by Batman group editor Mike Marts early last fall to see if I'd be interested in drawing one of the Return of Bruce Wayne issues. I told him I really wanted to, but I know what I have coming down the pike comic book work-wise plus with my teaching and administrative duties at the school (I work at my father's cartooning school). I very sadly had to decline. Mike then asked me if I'd be up for drawing a cover for one of the issues. I said yes, but in thinking about it for a few days, I thought it would be fun to draw all those interpretations of Bruce since it really bothered me that I didn't have the time to draw one of the interiors. Mike kindly obliged! I had no idea what the characters were except for one at that point. The project was at its infancy and from what Mike told me, Grant had a few ideas but nothing really fleshed out as of yet. All we really knew about was Caveman Batman… the others weren`t yet decided.

Then about a month later, I went up to the DC offices and had a working lunch with Mike. He had talked with Grant and had a better idea of the 6 issues and the characters and time periods but nothing concrete as far as story. It was at that lunch that we had come up with what the characters might look like and what the covers should be. It was so much fun…we would be tossing out ideas like, "Well, what if he just skinned a giant bat and wore that on his head?"…"What if he had this on or that on…" "Would he have a mask on…?" …"What was his background story…how and why would he have a hammer and would he kill….? Those types of things we were talked about in the restaurant for a good long time. Funny, too, when you're talking about these things in a busy restaurant you notice people at other tables looking at you odd… and I can't blame them.

Grant Morrison: Like any sane human being, I wanted to see Bruce Wayne doing 'High Plains Drifter' meets 'Unforgiven'. Simple as that! Our 'Man With No Name'-style Cowboy Bruce arrives in Gotham City to take care of some unfinished business and all hell breaks loose.

I've only started writing this one, so it's hard to say at this stage who might make an appearance! I do know that Jonah Hex will make an appearance and I'm looking forward to writing him for the first time.

On the Tone and Inspiration for Cowboy Batman:

Grant Morrison: Clint Eastwood. Sergio Leone. Hardcore cowboy pulp. This is Bruce as a pure unstoppable figure of vengeance and was inspired somewhat by the classic 'silent' Batman story in Detective Comics #439.

On Designing Cowboy Batman:

Andy Kubert: This one took awhile for me to come up with a design. My initial concept I really worked on, but tossed it at the last second in favor of a duster jacket type which I thought worked better.

Let me also say that I did reference for each of these characters …for Caveman Batman, I referenced Neanderthals and what they looked like mostly from reconstructions that were done. With the cowboy Batman, I looked at all kinds of cowboy stuff from old photos to Frederic Remington. My thinking is that it all has to be believable for it to work. I reference the heck out of everything. It has to look from that era. If it's not believable, it'll look either cheesy or out of place.
