BATMAN CRIME JAZZ

Composers talk crime jazz for Batman

Batman-on-Film.com posted a neat little piece yesterday night, and I thought I'd put it up here. It's interesting to think about, if nothing else. You can read the original piece here, but I summarized it below.

Some of you might remember the many, many speculation and rumors that came out about Christopher Nolan's first Batman film in the months (and even years) before it was to be released in 2005. The film was untitled, but some of the working titles were "Batman Rises" and, of course, the chosen title of "Batman Begins". But the title itself wasn't nearly as speculated on as the casting choices, particularly for the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. Eventually, it came out that among the actors who were on the shortlist for the role (which included "Dawson's Creek" and "Fringe" star Joshua Jackson, "28 Days Later" and later "Batman Begins" and "Dark Knight"s Scarecrow Cillian Murphy along with a few others), the top two choices were Christian Bale and Jake Gyllenhaal. Nolan, who had become friends with Christian Bale since directing him in "American Psycho" a few years earlier, chose Bale whereas screenwriter and producer of the film David Goyer wanted Gyllenhaal (even going as far as to go on record about his admiration of the young rising star).

Of course, we know now how it worked out; in September 2003 Bale was official cast as Batman, since he was Nolan's pick and The WB realized that he was a fan-favorite for the role in the new, more serious take on Batman. But, as the piece will describe, most everything would probably have been the same if Gyllenhaal had been on board, with a few minor differences. Of course, the actor would be different, but that could actually have helped Batman Begins itself become a bigger box-office success. Gyllenhaal at that point was a new, young rising star who had begun to make a pretty good name for himself, and could probably have drawn in some more people than the basically unknown Christian Bale. But, then again, we'll never really know...

The rest of the article was pretty interesting, and goes a bit more in detail about how the casting might have been different, particularly with Heath Ledger as the Joker and Jake's sister Maggie Gyllenhaal as Rachel Dawes in the sequel. But, basically, they ended up figuring most everything would have been the same. Jake Gyllenhaal could arguably have been at least as good of a Batman as Bale, and in the end I doubt much would have been different, except for maybe some of the box office numbers.

Anyways, if you want to check out what they had to say, you can read it at www.batman-on-film.com here.

The only thing any of us can say for sure is that there's no way it would have been NEARLY as bad as if Nic Cage had played Superman for Tim Burton...*shudders*
