Batman and Robin first stepped out of their DC comic-book world to become screen icons when their television series debuted in 1966. Colouring a generation with a cheeky new image of hero-worship and crime-fighting, the series quickly made superstars of its cast.
“It’s that short step beyond the good mother -- the first nightmare that sends shivers up your spine,” says Julie Newmar, explaining the enduring appeal of Catwoman, a role she seared into public consciousness on the show. Newmar, 77, is coming to Toronto this weekend for FanExpo alongside her original Batman co-stars Adam West and Burt Ward. She says she understands why fans still clamour for a glimpse of the original cast.
“Heavens to Betsy, you couldn’t take us seriously! It was so over the top and subversively brilliant that it’s like the great 18th century French farces -- it ranks with the Lenny Bruces of the world,” Newmar, a Tony Award-winning actress, says. “Men come up to me and say, ‘Did you know you were my first turn-on?’ I say, ‘Yes, dear. How old were you at the time?’ I still have to laugh when they say they were four.”
