IGN: Redesigning The Joker

Posted by Unknown

Got my copy this morning, and can't wait to finishing reading... oh yeah!!!

I managed to miss this one yesterday...

Comics.ign.com posted an interview with artist Lee Bermejo's discussing the Clown Prince of Crime's look in the new Joker graphic novel.

It seems so far, every interview conducted with either of Brian Azzarello orLee Bermejo's, starts off with focusing on the similarities between graphic novel Joker and Heath Ledger's in the Dark Knight. I recon they might be getting a tad fed up with that question by now...

IGN Comics: What made you want to work on Joker? I know you tend to be selective in the projects you take on – what made this one appealing to you? How long did you work on the project?

Bermejo: I think you have to be crazy not to want to work on the Joker! I can't think of many characters, heroes or villains, that are as malleable as him. He really can be interpreted in so many different ways and generally, people don't really want to scratch the surface because you can get into some really dark territory real fast. That was probably the prospect that drew me to the project the most... the idea to try and tread some really deep water and see if I could pull something really disturbing and complicated off. It takes me about two years to do these projects, more or less. It was the same for the Luthor project, and that mini-series really took it out of me. Brian has talked plenty about how we had no interest in working together and it was pretty true. We had both decided to move on do other things, but the discussion we had about the Joker really intrigued me. I already had an idea of how I wanted to interpret the character, even while Brian and I were still working on Lex. In fact, if you look closely at the newspaper Lex is reading in issue #3, there is a photo of my Joker there! When the timing and opportunity to finally do it came up, it just seemed like the logical choice.

IGN Comics: Naturally the first thing many fans will notice is the similarity between your Joker and Heath Ledger's in the Dark Knight. Was that simply happy coincidence, or did the film begin to affect what you and Brian Azzarello were doing?

Bermejo: Definitely a coincidence. I certainly don't want to take anything away from Nolan or Ledger, they did something spectacular and iconic with the character, but the reality of this particular situation is simple: Brian and I were already well into this graphic novel when they released the first photo of Ledger. In fact, I was drawing the sequence where Joker walks into the Italian restaurant. I admit, I freaked out when I saw the photo. I immediately called Brian, and I remember he was like, "It doesn't really look anything like your Joker." I still feel like all they really have in common is the carved smile. Honestly, the only thing i can tell you I know for sure is that my version of the Joker, the way you see him in this book, was established long before Ledger was even cast. Just to be clear, this is not to say that Nolan and Co. were informed by my drawing. I've said this before and I really find it to be true, that certain ideas float around at the same time for a reason. Pop culture, social tendencies, fashion, you name it. If you want to do a realistic interpretation of the Joker, there are only a few ways to do it.

Great interview this one... click here for more.

THE COLLECTION

Posted by Unknown

Well I thought it was about time to show off my current Batman collection. I might have mentioned this a while back but I've been collecting Batman since 1989, just about the time the Tim Burton's Batman was coming out. Well since then I've been obsessed and (despite a few moments of dis-interest), been a long term fan for nearly 20 years.

Well here are a few images of my collection as its continued to grow throughout the years.

The first images was about 1994 (the only reason I remember, was due to the fact, I had a Shadow stand-up from the movie out at that time). This was mainly spurred on by my big brother who worked the city centre's local comic shop and my first introduction into the big league world of DC Comics... right around the time of Knightfall... I was truly hooked.

Well finally here is a look at what the current collection looks like and I can't wait to continue to add more.

I would love to start seeing other people's collections and maybe start some kind of annual collection competitions, so please feel free to join me on the forum and start adding images of your collections and what got you into The Dark Knight...

LOS ANGELES TIMES: Christopher Nolan on 'Dark Knight' Part 2 & 3

Posted by Unknown

The Los Angeles Times has posted part 2 and 3 of its long interview with The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan. In Part 2, Nolan talks in-depth about his favorite scene (the interrogation scene between Batman and the Joker), and in Part 3, he talks about the problems of teaming Batman up with other superheroes and Heath Ledger's possible Oscar nomination.

Nolan: To be honest, it’s pretty easy for me. The scene that is so important and so central to me is the interrogation scene between Batman and the Joker in the film. When we were writing the script, that was always one of the central set pieces that we wanted to crack.

GB: Chris, this summer, "Iron Man" and "The Incredible Hulk" signaled the true start of the "crossover era" in comic-book films with Marvel Studios putting an emphasis on the fact that their heroes coexist in the same world. DC and Warner Bros. may embrace a similar strategy, especially if the Justice League film project is revived. Does that concern you? Your Gotham doesn't seem suited to that.

Nolan: I don’t think our Batman, our Gotham, lends itself to that kind of cross-fertilization. It goes back to one of the first things we wrangled with when we first started putting the story together: Is this a world in which comic books already exist? Is this a world in which superheroes already exist? If you think of "Batman Begins" and you think of the philosophy of this character trying to reinvent himself as a symbol, we took the position -- we didn’t address it directly in the film, but we did take the position philosophically -- that superheroes simply don’t exist. If they did, if Bruce knew of Superman or even of comic books, then that’s a completely different decision that he’s making when he puts on a costume in an attempt to become a symbol. It’s a paradox and a conundrum, but what we did is go back to the very original concept and idea of the character. In his first appearances, he invents himself as a totally original creation.

GB: That doesn't lend itselt to having him swing on a rope across the Metropolis skyline.

Nolan: No, correct, it’s a different universe. It’s a different way of looking at it. Now, it's been done successfully, very successfully, in the comics so I don’t dispute it as an approach. It just isn’t the approach we took. We had to make a decision for "Batman Begins."

TONY DANIEL INVTERVIEW

Over at Tony Daniel's blog is a new post highlighting NEWCITY MAGAZINE, hitting Chicago newsstands everywhere today, has an interview with Tony Daniels. RIP is mainly discussed, so if you're interested you can click the link.

In D.C. Comics’ flagship eponymous “Batman” title, the Caped Crusader has been beaten, loaded up with heroin and crystal meth, hallucinating and getting assists from the interdimensional (or Batman delusional?) Bat-Mite. It’s all part of the current, over-the-top, “R.I.P.” storyline—another of the comics world’s “this changes everything” events, set to wrap up in “Batman #681” on November 5.

With wildly popular comics madman Grant Morrison (“The Invisibles,” “New X-Men,” “Animal Man”) on board as “R.I.P.” scribe, every page has been peppered with out-there developments, overcomplicated complications and a surprising concept that plays off a forgotten “Batman” comic from fifty years ago. Meanwhile, and not getting anywhere near as much attention as “R.I.P.”s plot developments, is the career-best artwork being offered up by Chicago-area talent Tony Daniel.

NEWSARAMA: Dan DiDio: 20 Questions, 20 Answers

Posted by Unknown

Very interesting read is NEWARAMAS new Q&A with Dan DiDio who has agreed to be grilled bi-weekly here at Newsarama, with answers to 20 questions posted every other Wednesday. We’re kicking things off this week with 20 questions that cover everything from the art on Final Crisis #7 to the Red Circle and Milestone characters, what’s going on with Batman.

I've basically only focused on the Batman related questions and answers:

2) Let’s talk about the post Final Crisis DC Universe then...what’s it like?

DD: Here’s the way it works right now, and the reason why things will pick up from Final Crisis in March: where we stand right now in January, we’re addressing a common tonality in the DCU. That’s one of the reasons we created “Faces of Evil,” because we wanted to give a sense that the universe was coming back together again at the start of the New Year. Those stories are all stand alone, but tonally, address what it’s like to live in the DCU as a villain in regards to what’s happening in those issues.

In February, again, we’re bringing the line back closer together and working to bring the continuity back in synch. In that month, we’ll have a series of books – I think we’re up to about 19 in all now – that will have six page stories as backups, and each book will be branded “Origins and Omens.” What you’re going to see in those stories is a little of the origin of each character, what’s essential to know about each character to date, and more importantly, a little foreshadowing of what’s to come with the character. Each one of the “Origins and Omens” installments will have a common narrator, and that narrator has direct ties to Blackest Night later in the year.

So that’s why I said that the DCU will reflect ,Final Crisis starting in March – not only because we wanted to reach a point where we could give the lay of the land of the DCU and the various titles, and allow for the books to all have great jumping on points. Readers can get caught up with the six page stories, and then follow through in March and the rest of the year.

4) In writing the “new” origins of the characters, are these told within the tapestry of the larger DCU since the Red Circle characters are now a part of the larger DC Universe?

DD: Before I get into that, I’m already anticipating the first red flag people will throw in the air here, is that, “Wait a minute – that’s the Bruce Wayne Batman in those issues of Brave and the Bold”...but what we’re really more interested in is addressing and presenting these characters as they fit into the DCU. So we’ll be working with the Bruce Wayne Batman in those stories.

As for their origins – these are the original incarnations of the characters, showing how they came to receive their powers and take their roles. They have their own stories that take place in their cities with their own supporting characters. The stories we’ll read will show Batman entering into their world more so than they are entering into Batman’s. So Batman becomes our entry point into the world of the Red Circle characters, and we’re introducing them all for the first time so we’ll know exactly who they are, what their motivations are, what their powers are, and more importantly, what their purpose in the DCU is. Jesus Saiz will be the artist on the series with JMS.

7) We’ll get back to the generational heroes in a moment, but first, earlier, when you were talking about Brave and the Bold - Batman in those stories will be Bruce Wayne, which somewhat flies in the face of what’s been teased, or what readers have been led to believe is coming at the end of “Batman R.I.P.” Let’s talk about post “R.I.P.” – you’ve dropped the hint about “The Battle for the Cowl...” That seems to indicate that Bruce Wayne is not around, or the role of Batman is up for grabs...

DD: Let’s put it this way: the cowl is there, and people are battling for it. [laughs] I never said that Bruce isn’t fighting for it. The “battle” aspect of it seems to suggest that there are other people who are interested in the mantle of Batman...and at this particular point, we’re addressing what the cowl stands for, and what the name stands for. Is it just the person? Is it an ideal? Is it an icon? Is it something that needs to continue, or is it something that goes away with the man who is with it?

We’ve examined a lot of the importance of who Bruce Wayne is in “R.I.P.” We’ve examined what motives him, and what motivated him to be Batman. In Final Crisis #6, which follows directly after the “R.I.P” storyline – again, that’s one of the reasons why we had to make the artistic changes we did – there is a definite conclusion to Batman’s story.

8) Seen in that light, there is an argument to be made given Bruce’s condition in the latest “R.I.P.” that members of his family wouldn’t think he was fit to wear the cowl...not to mention, it’s often been said that Bruce will one day end up in Arkham himself...

DD: It’s either that or...there’s so much about generations and legacy in the DCU and the passing of the mantle. The question becomes, “Is it the person that matters, or is it he cowl that matters?” There are a lot of stories you hear about someone having to take over the family business, and always what adds the drama to those stories is the questioning – does the person who has to step up want to go their own way, or are they trapped in a destiny that they didn’t create? That’s one of the issues we’re addressing, and of course, we’re also addressing the makeup of the DCU and the importance of certain characters and what their roles are – not just what they do by themselves, but how they affect others.

9) Let’s go down that road for a minute – the generations and the “passing of the cowl.” At one time Dan, you were a big proponent of arresting the development of the sidekicks in order not to have them age while their mentors have to remain a certain age. In fact, your example of this gone amuck, and where DC was headed was that sooner or later, Nightwing, the original Robin, would be older than Bruce Wayne. Aren’t you going back toward by what you once argued against by having things move towards a passing on of the mantle?

DD: Not at all. What I did say was that I was against consistent reboots of the character – where you erased everything and started all over again. My two biggest conceits are, for a number of our characters: who is the most recognizable character in that costume? What is the one most people gravitate towards and the most people address as the definitive version of the character. The other is that I hate how we keep on erasing things and starting over. What I like to do is if there is a natural path to the story, to follow that story.

With Batman in particular, and in some cases with Superman, both of them are bigger than who they are. They’ve affected not just themselves and their respective cities, but so many other characters have been inspired by them, taken on their mantle, taken on their emblem. They operate on the assumption, for instance, that they are achieving what they believe that Batman thinks is right. That’s what we’re really exploring here. We have so many characters that are built off of who Batman is – not just his sidekicks, but so many other characters that inhabit his world, that I think there is a potential here to tell an interesting and compelling story, not just about Batman, but what Batman means to everyone that he’s touched throughout his life. That’s why we’re doing this.

10) So you’re seeing what you’re doing more as a lateral expansion rather than a forward chronological expansion?

DD: More importantly, we’re not going to be coming in with a brand new character, and he’s becoming a brand new thing. This – what we see in “R.I.P.” and afterwards for Batman is a natural expansion of who he is and the people that inhabit his world. That’s what we’re going to be focusing on.

NEWSARAMA: Lee Bermejo on Joker - And it's NOT a Dark Knight Sequel

Posted by Unknown

Released today is the eagerly anticipated graphic novel "Joker", from writer Brian Azzarello. Today Newsarama.com, posted an interview with artist Lee Bermejo about illustrating the novel, his influences, how it’s not related to The Dark Knight (seriously), and the scene that hit him like a punch in the gut.

Newsarama: Lee, what got you on to this project in the first place, and how was it described to you? Obviously, it's at the very least a thematic sequel to The Dark Knight, right?

Lee Bermejo: Actually, no, our project has nothing to do with The Dark Knight and was in production well before they began the film. Basically, after we finished Luthor, both Brian and I had decided to go our separate ways and do other projects. I believe Dan DiDio had spoken with Brian about the idea of following up Luthor and the obvious choice was Joker. Brian and I spoke about the possibility of doing it briefly in San Diego that year. At that point, it seemed like the project wasn't going to happen, we were just having fun talking about what we would do. I had done a couple drawings of the Joker at that point and we both agreed that we would prefer to do a more adult oriented Joker story.

When circumstances made the possibility of doing the project more of a reality, we decided to get over ourselves and just do it. I think it was just one of those situations where the character was too good to pass up.

NEWSARAMA: Green & Johnson on Superman/ Batman's Power Switch

Posted by Unknown

This week's Superman/Batman #53 is the start of a new storyline and introduces a new artist for the series, as Rags Morales joins the writing team of Michael Green and Mike Johnson for a story about what happens when Superman and Batman switch powers.

Newsarama: What can you tell us about this storyline and how Superman and Batman switch powers?

Mike Johnson: Power switching is probably the oldest trick in the Supes/Bats playbook, but we saw it as an opportunity to get deeper into the psyche of the characters. It brings up all sorts of interesting questions: How would they react? How would it affect their relationship? How would it affect the world? There's no point in telling the story if it isn't rooted in something deeper than just spectacle. Which there will be plenty of. The actual switch involves a favorite Super-villain who enjoys haggis and screaming.

Michael Green: Yep. For us it always goes back to, "What's a situation we can put these two in that allows us to explore their similarities and differences?" That’s the whole point of this series.

NRAMA: How did you guys come up with the concept?

MJ: Magic Superman/Batman 8-Ball. And also wanting to revisit classic S/B stories with a new perspective. Buy your World's Finest Showcases now!

MG: The real secret is that Mike IS the S/B magic 8-Ball. I shake his head and stories like this come out. Every writer should have one. MJ: Michael's so gracious. If I'm the 8-Ball, he's like the S/B Ouija board. Or something.

CBR: Midway releases new MK vs DCU footage

Posted by Unknown

Midway has released an all-new video highlighting the Super Moves and Pro Moves in Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. Senior Designers John Edwards and Paulo Garcia take you through some of the Pro Moves and Super Moves from the game, explaining the details behind many of the character’s unique moves.

Super Moves are what separates Mortal Kombat from other 3D fighters. With fighters that can teleport, shoot projectiles and cast spells, Mortal Kombat delivers the most exciting battles in fighting games today.

Pro Moves are enhanced versions of Super Moves for the hardcore players. With precise timing, players can expand their Super Moves into Pro Moves. For example, a Pro Move will launch two projectiles instead of one, inflict more damage or extend a combo beyond where it normally ends. While Pro Moves are more challenging to pull off, the rewards are also bigger.

CBR: Senior Producer Yanagi on DC Universe Online

Posted by Unknown

I wasn't going to add, this but I've been following DCUO since it's announcement back in 2007. More and more news is starting to pop up and I'm getting very excited about the look and feel of this game.

CBR News has been lucky enough to get a chance to ask some questions of Wes Yanagi, Senior Producer for “DC Universe Online.” As it’s still fairly early in the development process, there were some things that Yanagi could not speak to, but he answered as many of our questions as he could.

CBR: Are costumes completely customizable, or will the templates be based on existing character costumes? For example, if someone were to create a winged character like Hawkman, what is the level of customization they have to create their own look?

WY: We can’t get into too many details at this point, but when you create your hero or villain, you’ll be able to choose from a variety of body sizes, silhouettes and hairstyles. We spent a lot of time iterating on these designs with Jim Lee, our executive creative director, to get a nice range of choices. The costume options will be influenced by your character's origin, such as technology or magic. Once you roll a character, you’re not locked into that specific costume — it can change over time if you so choose.

CBR: Could you explain the idea of power themes as opposed to classes?

WY: We will have a wide variety of powers to choose from. Players will gain power as they level, and leveling occurs as players complete the game content. But we wrap this and tweak them in metaphors that make sense for these characters. In the DCU, heroes and villains become more experienced by training, discovering new powers, and practicing with the ones they already know.

CBR: How are you balancing the controls and gameplay between the PC and the PS3?

WY: With our current internal build, you can play with either a mouse and keyboard, or a PS3 controller. So, it’s really just a matter of personal preference with the controls. From a gameplay standpoint, we don’t see it as two platforms. We see it as two ways to play the same game, to step into the same universe.

NEWSARAMA: Talking to 'Brave & the Bold's' Michael Jelenic

Posted by Unknown

I keep saying it, but truly I'm looking forward to seeing Batman: B&B, so naturally, I can't wait to digest all the awesome news and articles coming up about thew new animated series.

Newsarmama have posted an interview with series editor/producer Michael Jelenic.

Have to say, once you get a look at what he did for the pilot episode of Brave & Bold, entitled “Rise of the Blue Beetle,” this latest incarnation of Batman has his dry wit sharpened to a razor-like fineness. He also seems to be a much more compassionate character as he tries to mentor the young Jamie Hernandez about being a hero. The opening segment featuring a less serious Green Arrow taking on the campiest Clock King ever is also a hoot. At the same time, Jelenic’s script packs a ton of action in a very tight 22 or so minutes. So don’t be surprised if this show ends up solidifying Cartoon Network’s already hot Friday action block.

Here's a snippet:

Newsarama: What made you decide to kick off this new series with the Blue Beetle?

Micheal Jelenic: I think Blue Beetle has been testing really huge with the fans. He’s becoming a character people like almost as much as Batman, or at least this recent incarnation. Besides, we thought a young person to have Batman team up with would be a good combination. Also, he’s just someone we haven’t seen animated too much. So it seemed like an exciting way to start off the show. I mean he’s a character the fans know, the kids will be excited about and we haven’t seen before. So it made a lot of sense on a lot of levels.

NRAMA: I couldn’t help but feel the visual style you adapted is more 50s/60s-Dick Sprang influenced. Is that the case?

MJ: Yeah. James was definitely influenced by the look of the 40s and wanted to bring that to life.

NRAMA: How does that affect your writing?

MJ: I think that for the writing aspect, I definitely wanted to go back to the older types of stories. They just have this great sense of adventure and are larger than life. You’ll see some change from the first to the twelfth episode. We found a more consistent tone. But in the beginning we wanted to go back to that older for to story telling. It had all these iconic images and ideas.

Also listed at the end of the interview is the line-up of character that will appear in the first 26 episodes.

LOS ANGELES TIMES: Christopher Nolan on 'Dark Knight' Part1

Posted by Unknown

The Los Angeles Times has an exclusive first of a three-part interview with Christopher Nolan, the director of the astoundingly successful summer film “The Dark Knight,” which has pulled in $528 million in the U.S. alone (a total second only to “Titanic”) and has worldwide grosses that are now approaching the $1 billion mark.

The 38-year-old London native has just returned home to Los Angeles (where he attended the Spike TV Scream 2008 Awards, pictured above) after a month long stay at Anna Maria Island on the west coast of Florida where, along with playing on the beach with his children, he contemplated the commercial success of his grim superhero epic — as well as the industry buzz about the film’s chances during the upcoming Oscar season. In today's installment, he talks about the perceived politics of the movie, his plans for the future and that staggering box-office total.

Geoff Boucher: Watching "The Dark Knight," it’s very easy to imagine the Joker returning to Gotham, the way his fate remains unresolved. When you were writing the film, did you anticipate that the Joker would be back in the third film?

NOLAN: No, really and in truth, I only deal with one film at a time. I find myself sort of protesting this issue a lot. We’ve never attempted to save anything for a sequel or set up anything for a sequel. That seems improbable to some people because, particularly with "Batman Begins," the film ended with a particular hook [with Jim Gordon showing Batman a Joker playing card announcing the arrival of a new villain in town]. But for me that was just about the excitement of people leaving the theater with the sense that now we have the character up and running. I wanted people to walk away with that sense in their head. You know, that he’s become the Batman in the movie. That’s why we had the title come up at the end, because it was "Batman Begins," and it was all very specific to that.

Then I got excited about seeing where that character would go. It was planned in advance, but it followed in that way. But we tried our hardest to really do everything in this movie that we would want to see the Joker do and to get that in the fabric of the story as much as possible. We wanted the Joker’s final taunt to Batman to be that they are locked in an ongoing struggle because of Batman’s rules. There’s a paradox there. Batman won’t kill. And the Joker is not interested in completely defeating Batman because he’s fascinated by him and he enjoys sparring with him. It’s trapped both of them. That was really the meaning of it. Of course what happened is Heath created the most extraordinary character that you would love to see 10 movies about. That’s the bittersweet thing. It was incredible characterization. It is a bittersweet thing for all of us.

GB: Could you see actually yourself not making the third Batman film?

NOLAN: Well ... let me think how to put this. There are two things to be said. One is the emphasis on story. What’s the story? Is there a story that’s going to keep me emotionally invested for the couple of years that it will take to make another one? That’s the overriding question. On a more superficial level, I have to ask the question: How many good third movies in a franchise can people name? [Laughs.] At the same time, in taking on the second one, we had the challenge of trying to make a great second movie, and there haven't been too many of those either. It’s all about the story really. If the story is there, everything is possible. I hope that was a suitably slippery answer.

IGN.COM: The Joker's Wild Ride

Posted by Unknown

Oh it just keeps coming and coming. IGN Comics.com sat down with Azzarello to dish about the highly anticipated project, his influences, and the book's relationship to The Dark Knight. His answers might surprise you.

IGN Comics: Can you explain this world that you tried to capture in this story? There's an interesting meeting between the "hyper-realism" of the films and the more comic booky universe. How'd you decide to tackle Gotham from the angle you did?

Azzarello: Basically, I think that Gotham is all of our urban nightmares and fears made into reality. Instead of hearing footsteps from behind you while you walk down the streets, turning around and finding nobody there, there is somebody there. And he is gunning for you. [laughs] There is somebody around the corner. So don't go into the alleys at night!

IGN Comics: I want to talk about Batman's role in this book for a bit. Batman maintains an almost God-like presence in this book in that he seems to always be there even when he can't be seen on the page. He almost seems more God-like than Superman did in Man of Steel. What's your take on the Batman-Joker dynamic, and the Batman-Gotham relationship?

Azzarello: Well you're right. That's the way we played him – that he is a part of Gotham. He's always there. The Joker knows he's always there. Everyone knows he's always there. I don't think I played him more God-like necessarily. I guess the best way to explain it is, yes, Superman is always there, but nobody is paranoid about him always being there. With Batman, there's a certain paranoia about his presence, particularly in the criminal underworld. But it's funny – the criminals in this book are scared of Batman, but they're terrified of Joker.

IGN Comics: When you're doing one of these reality based takes on Batman's world, Batman himself can often be the most difficult character to integrate into the story realistically, or at least with that somewhat realistic slant. Were you aware of that going into this project, and did you decide to keep him on the sidelines for the most part because of that?

Azzarello: Well let's be honest – it's not realism. It's hyper reality. But if you play it correctly, and set up the boundaries, the reader will go with you as realism. And having Lee as the artist was perfect to pull that kind of thing off. I mean his work is hyper real. Some people would say his work is photo-realistic, but it's not. It's very, very hyper real. He turns it to eleven. [laughs]

The Dark Knight Special Edition Soundtrack (2 Disc)?

Posted by Unknown

I spotted this on Superherohype.com, and apparently "Warner Bros Records" will be releasing a Special Edition version of The Dark Knight soundtrack on December 9. Not much is known about the release, but the Amazon.com listing states that it includes two discs.

This is my all time favorite score, so I'll be keeping a keen eye on this one and hopefully it won't turn out to be a hoax like complete Batman Begins score.

Don't know if anyone ever saw a while back someone put together a complete score for Batman Begins. Well in actual fact it was the original score chopped into various edits to co-inside with the movie. What was 10 or 11 tracked ended up being 17 or 18 (I can't remember now), and then added the end credits, which was ripped from the DVD and also added the trailer music taken from other scores... fingers crossed this is legit.

In the mean time, for those of you who can't get enough of the Batman Begins or Dark Knight score, I've added the below behind the scenes, which shows small snippets of Chris Nolan with Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard.

THE BATMAN: B&B CHARACTER DESIGNS

Posted by Unknown

Comics Continuum has been provided with some character designs for the new Batman: The Brave and the Bold animated series along with a Q&A session with Sam Register (executive producer), James Tucker (supervising producer) and Andrea Romano (voice director).

Comics Continuum: Describe the Batman for the new Brave and the Bold series. He seems less dark and brooding and more of a fun-filled adventurer. How does this affect the tone of the show?

Tucker: Well, the way you described it is pretty much on the mark. This is just the version of Batman that has been in the comics from shortly after his creation up until some of the darker, grittier versions of his character appeared in the late '80s and onward. Typically, people start telling the story from where his parents are murdered. That's not suitable for what is deemed children's entertainment. This version signals a return to a more innocent time. Batman is a crime fighter and hero first. As a result, Batman can be ironic he can show more sides of himself than if he's just brooding, being gruff and distant to his usual cast of characters. He simply has to be more approachable for the premise of this show to work. Otherwise, why would anyone even bother to work with him? It's pretty much the Batman from the Brave and the Bold comics I read as a kid.

Romano: I absolutely agree. He is less "brooding," not as obsessed with vengeance as in the past. One thing I really like about the format of this series is that we get inside his head, get to hear what he's thinking before he acts. Diedrich Bader is the new voice of Batman and has a great record of accomplishment doing animated voices.

Also mentioned was the shows theme song has been written and performed by Andy Sturmer and Michael McCuistion, Lolitla Ritmanis and Kristopher Carter are providing music.

The voice cast in the opening episode "Rise of the Blue Beetle!" includes Dee Bradley Baker as Clock King and Gibble Leader, Will Friedle as Jaime/Blue Beetle, Jason Marsden as Paco, James Arnold Taylor as Green Arrow and Marc Worden as Kanjar Ro.

The episode, set to air on Nov. 14, opens with Batman and Green Arrow against Clock King, but features Batman and the Blue Beetle in an outer space adventure as they defend an alien race known as the Gibbles against Kanjar Ro. The episode tests the new Blue Beetle's worthiness as a hero.
Head on over to Comics Continuum for more character designs and the full interview.

Brian Azzarello's JOKER Preview Hype

Posted by Unknown

To most everyone who saw “The Dark Knight” this summer — and by now, who didn’t see “The Dark Knight” — whether you liked the story or not, one thing darn-near everyone agrees on is Heath Ledger not only stole the show, but managed to completely transform the character of the Joker to a point where Hollywood will be hard pressed to find a suitable replacement should the character factor into future “Batman” films.

And now, DC Comics has delivered an original graphic novel that does for the comic book Joker what Ledger did for the film’s. Writer Brian Azzarello and artist Lee Bermejo’s “Joker” — which hits shelves October 29 — paints the “Clown Prince of Crime” as a sadistic, unpredictable and absurdly violent psychopath, or in other words, exactly the way the character should be portrayed. And while the story takes place well-outside the realm of Christopher Nolan’s vision of Gotham City, if you liked “The Dark Knight,” “Joker” is a must-have for your bookshelf.

The story — narrated through the voice of one of the Joker’s recently-hired goons — follows the just-released-from-Arkham Asylum villain as he seeks to reclaim his rightful spot at the top of Gotham criminal hierarchy by any means necessary. In order to get to that spot again, he’ll have to face the rest of Gotham’s top dogs — including Two-Face, The Riddler, Killer Croc and the Penguin.

FEARNET.COM EXCLUSIVE: Brian Azzarello Talks 'Joker'!

Posted by Unknown

Head on over to fearnet.com to check out what Brian Azzarello had to say about Joker, his upcoming graphic novel (due out in bookstores November 4th) examining everyone's favorite Clown Prince of Crime...

FN: How would you describe your vision of the character?

BA: He's completely insane. You don't know what he's going to do. In the Lex book, we told that stpry from Lex's perspective. With Joker, we're using one of his henchmen, a guy who joins his gang and gets real close with him. Because I think getting in Joker's head is just a mistake. He's insane, and to try and tell a story from an insane person's perspective takes away some of the power of that insanity.

TV’s ‘Batman’ Theme Song Composer Neal Hefti, R.I.P.

Posted by Unknown

Sad news out of Hollywood today, as acclaimed composer, arranger and jazz trumpeter, Neal Hefti, passed away on Saturday from “undetermined causes.” He was 85-years-old.

While Hefti’s work could be heard on such classic television shows as “The Odd Couple” and films including “Barefoot in the Park,” comic fans know him best as the composer behind the iconic theme to the ’60s “Batman” TV series, for which he won a Grammy Award.

The New York Times has an extensive story up, chronicling Hefti’s career, which notes that, in addition to his film and television work, Hefti also worked with such notable talent as Frank Sinatra, Doris Day, Mel Tormé and Tony Bennett.

In a telephone interview with his son, Paul, he recalls the evolution of the classic theme song to “Batman.”

“He told me he tore up more paper on ‘Batman’ than on any other work he ever did,” Paul Hefti said in the Times piece. “He had to find something that worked with the lowest common denominator, so it would appeal to kids, yet wouldn’t sound stupid. What he came up with was a 12-bar blues with a guitar hook and one word.”

HOT TOYS: Two-Face Collectible Revealed

Posted by Unknown

WOW!!! Truly amazing. Fans of Two-Face, it's time to celebrate. Hot Toys, a collectibles manufacturer based in Hong Kong, has released images of its upcoming 12-inch action figure based off of Aaron Eckhart's character in the Dark Knight film. Due later this year, or possibly early 2009, the toy appears to contain the same level of detail as Hot Toys' other Dark Knight offerings.

For the past several months, images of Batman and the Joker have flooded the Internet as licensees rushed to prepare merchandise based on Christopher Nolan's blockbuster sequel. Curiously though, toys of Two-Face were missing. From what we've heard, Warner kept the final designs of Harvey "Two-Face" Dent so secret that even companies making collectibles didn't have a firm idea of what would hit the screen. That's why we've seen variations of the Joker (Hot Toys has two 12-inch figures and a bust) and Batman (again two 12-inch pieces and a bust), but no Dent. Fortunately it seems design teams have had a chance to gather the imagery needed to develop figures based on Gotham's "White Knight."

Hot Toys 1/6 scale, 12-inch figure will feature 32 points of articulation, interchangeable heads and hands, an alternate jacket, a pistol and a coin, as well as stand and nameplate. The company estimates the product will be due out at the end of the year, but did not specify a price point. Previous Hot Toy products in this line have run over $100, so that would be a safe bet here as well.
