IGN Comics has posted an exclusive interview with DC Comics executive editor Dan Didio to talk about Batman: Battle for the Cowl and other event coming up in the DC Universe.
IGN Comics: Let's start off with Battle for the Cowl, which is now only a couple weeks away. From the sound of it, it looks like Cowl, its tie-ins and the many series to follow plan on shaking up the Batman family and the Batman world in a more significant capacity than we've seen in years, and perhaps in your entire tenure. By shaking up the Batman world like you are, what are your hopes for both his corner of the DCU and the Batman franchise as a whole?
Dan DiDio: A couple things are accomplished. The first one is that we realized how important Bruce Wayne is by his absence. What happens is you see the void that's created in Gotham City, how everyone is affected by it and how he's affected people over the years. Ultimately, even though he's not there, he's still an incredible presence in all these characters' lives and in the city itself. That's the first part of the series. The second part is that we have so many other great characters that inhabit Batman's world, and this gives them a chance to shine. We have Alfred moving to the forefront in regards to the Outsiders team. And then of course, you're going to see things happen with Tim Drake, Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Barbara Gordon – everyone seems to be moving or changing in some way shape or form. Which I think is really good, because even though they've had their own books, those books always felt relegated to run behind Batman's story. Now they'll be part of Batman's story.
IGN Comics: So ideally, six months from now how would you like Batman's world and the Batman line of books to look and operate?
DiDio: I'm hoping that realistically it's going to have a different feel and a different flavor. Ultimately, who winds up in the Batman suit will naturally approach things and do things in a different way. It gives you a chance to explore so many of the stories we've told before when Bruce Wayne was Batman, and then with the new Batman in place, we get to explore those stories again but from a different set of eyes.
